National Grid – Career Development Workshops

National Grid owns and operates the infrastructure for the transmission and distribution of gas and electricity in the UK.  It is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world.

Operating in a fast changing world, they recognise that 70% of development occurs through experiences on the job, 20% through relationships and 10% through development programmes and formal training.  To support employees in managing their careers, National Grid engaged us to run a series of Career Development Workshops that included:

  • A 1:1 conversation with a career coach to discuss career experience and expectations for the workshop
  • A one-day Career Development Workshop to:
    • Review their career to date from both an internal and external perspective
    • Identify when they are at their best, their strengths and development needs
    • Reflect on their career hopes in the context of their personal and social life
    • Understand their career enablers and blockers
    • Build a career development plan
  • A 1:1 follow up coaching session to discuss reflections, conversations and actions post the workshop
Through this programme, participants were able to make important, informed career decisions; create actionable career development plans; and gained tools and techniques for managing their careers on an ongoing basis.  This was conducted with the support of the HR business Partner and engagement of the Line Manager.
