Lessons Shared In How To Find The Golden Few

Consulting and research firm Jackson Samuel has published a research report called: ‘The Golden Few: Lessons in talent management from the worlds of entertainment, sport, arts and academia.’ The report maps out the findings of research carried out among UK organizations responsible for spotting and working with talented individuals including a premiership football academy, a model agency, music and entertainment organizations and top schools.

Key findings from the report include:

  • A new word for talent – The Golden Few are more than just talented, they are uniquely gifted, captivatingly charismatic and downright driven.
  • Elite is not a swear word – not everyone has the same level of talent. Special people need to be treated differently.
  • We’ve lost the art of pastoral care – many HR departments and line managers are failing to take a genuine interest in the person, rather than person in the job.
  • 24/7 talent spotting – be on the look-out for special talent ALL the time, not just in interviews.
  • It’s not a career, it’s a set of scenarios – careers are no longer completely linear, but take many shapes and forms.
  • The HR function has lost its way – a back to basics approach is needed after the rush to be seen as a strategically important business partner.
